Cultural Center of Philippines names Carlos Quijon Jr. as Contemporary Curator

TheCultural Center of the Philippines(CCP) inManilahasappointedart historian, critic, and curatorCarlos Quijon Jr.chief curator of its Contemporary Art Museum. Quijon arrives at the institution from the Museum of Modern Art, New York, where he has spent the past two years as the inaugural Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives fellow for Southeast and East Asia.
Before joining MoMA, Quijon curated the Philippine pavilion at the Sixtieth Venice Biennale in 2024, presenting the work of intermedia artistMark Salvatus. He has organized exhibitions in Busan, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, New York, São Paulo, Seoul, and Singapore and is an alumnus of the inaugural Para Site Workshops for Emerging Professionals in Hong Kong, launched in 2015. As a critic, Quijon has contributed to numerous publications, includingArtforum,ArtReview,Art Monthly,e-flux, andFrieze.
In his new role, Quijon will be in charge of one of the Philippines’ largest contemporary art collections, spanning the 1960s to the 1980s. He will shape the exhibition program and shepherd the presentation of the online 21AM Visual Arts Collection, which was unveiled in 2022. The contemporary art museum is contained within Tanghalang Pambansa, CCP’s main building. Since 2021 the cultural center has been undergoing a major renovation: It is set to reopen in early 2027.
“I believe in CCP’s role in advocating for and enriching the artistic sensibilities of our Filipino artists and promoting them to our local public and our international audiences, as well,” said Quijon in a statement. “The goal is to strengthen the place of the CCP in national and regional conversations around contemporary art.”
