1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair Announces Exhibitors for London
The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, which was founded in London in 2013 and has since expanded with satellite editions in Marrakech and New York, announced 35 exhibitors for its next edition in the British capital this fall. Scheduled for October 15–18 at Somerset House, alongside Frieze London and Frieze Masters, the fair will feature a focus on African modernists through curated booths and a 1-54 Presents’ spotlight exhibition titled “West Wind,” curated by the South African–Portuguese art historian Nancy Dantas. “Inspired by the 1966 song and epithet for African unity,” a press release reads, “the exhibition brings together the work of pioneering modern artists from across Africa.” Touria El Glaoui, who founded the fair and serves as its director, told ARTnews, “Somerset House gave 1-54 its first stage in 2013. For our 14th London edition, we are turning our attention to the modernists whose work helped shape the histories we engage with today. Bringing them into conversation with contemporary artists gives us a fuller and more accurate account of African art.” The full exhibitor list follows below.
