David Zwirner Exits New York’s Upper East Side

David Zwirnerhas closed its outpost at 34 East Sixty-Ninth Street in New York,Artnet Newsreports. The gallery had occupied space in a town house there since 2017. Its last show, organized with Paris’s Galerie Kuegel, was a group exhibition, “Set in Stone,” which closed June 26. Zwirner is the latest gallery to leave the block, following Nara Roesler in 2020 and, more recently, Hauser & Wirth, which departed last year.
“It was always our plan to leave the Upper East Side once the last phase of our Chelsea overhaul was complete,” a Zwirner spokesperson said in a statement. “We’re sad to leave the Upper East Side. We’re looking forward to our fall exhibition program on 19th Street, 20th Street, and in Tribeca.”
The gallery recently completed the Annabelle Selldorf–designed renovation of its space at 525 West Nineteenth Street. Its presence in Chelsea is looming: Zwirner also operates galleries at 537 West Twentieth Street and at the interconnected addresses of 519, 525, and 533 West Nineteenth Street. As well, it has operated a space in TriBeCa since 2021. Originally called 52 Walker, after its street address, the outpost was renamed David Zwirner Tribeca earlier this year. Zwirner additionally operates galleries in Los Angeles, London, Paris, and Hong Kong.
Its departure from the Upper East Side does not leave the area bereft of dealers. Among the galleries operating outposts there are Almine Rech, Gagosian, Gladstone, Lévy Gorvy Dayan, Sprüth Magers, Skarstedt, and White Cube.
