Big changes are afoot atJames Cohan Gallery, whichlaunchedits new identity asNORR COHANon July 15. The announcement also revealed that partner David Norr is now the sole owner and leader of the gallery, which operates spaces in Manhattan’s TriBeCa neighborhood and maintains an international presence at art fairs.
Founded in 1999 by art dealers James and Jane Cohan, the gallery has worked with a wide variety of artists including Fred Tomaselli, Yinka Shonibare, Robert Smithson, Bill Viola, Teresa Margolles, Tuan Andrew Nguyen, and Kennedy Yanko, among many others. The announcement stated that James Cohan will continue to work with artists and collectors in a reduced capacity, while Jane is retiring from her role.
Norr, who held curatorial positions at the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, joined the gallery in 2015. He became a partner in 2018 before he was made a co-owner as part of the Cohans’ succession planning. James Cohan told Artnews that making the decision to appoint Norr as their successor felt “very freeing and really energizing. It gave me an opportunity to do other projects that I probably wouldn’t have done. And it gave David great latitude.”
In a press statement, Norr said: “It’s the privilege of a lifetime to build upon what Jim and Jane created, and I feel an enormous sense of gratitude to have spent 11 years learning from the best in the business.” Architecture firm Ideas of Order is currently renovating the gallery’s spaces in TriBeCa, which will reopen on September 10 this year under the new NORR COHAN name for the fall gallery season.
