When the long-running contemporary art fair Artissima opens its 33rd edition in late October, 180 galleries from 35 countries will welcome visitors to the Oval, a vast former Olympic speed skating facility that has hosted the fair since 2010. Luigi Fassi returns as director for the fifth year running. He has organized this year’s 180 galleries (a handful more than the 176 that participated last year) into several distinct sections: new entries (33 galleries are participating for the first time, but this sector highlights 17 of those that are considered to be emerging), monologue/dialogue (experimental galleries featuring one or two artists), art editions (nonprofits showing prints and multiples), present future and back to the future (single-artist presentations dedicated to, respectively, emerging artists and pioneers of contemporary art), and disegni (monographic booths featuring drawing).
