TheDormition Cathedralin Kyiv was damaged by a fire caused by a major Russian drone strike acrossUkrainein the early hours of June 15. The structure, which dates to the eleventh century, is part of theKyiv-Pechersk Lavra, or Monastery of the Caves, aUNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery includes a massive network of underground catacombs, which contain the bodies of early Slavic saints, and is one of the most sacred locations in Eastern Orthodox Christianity and a symbol of the country’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

The fire engulfed approximately 8,600 square feet of the cathedral’s roof before being extinguished by local firefighters.Al Jazeerareported that monks and rescue workers collaborated to form human chains via which treasures were passed from the burning building to safety.

The late-night attack focused on the Ukrainian capital, where at least five people died, and also included a so-called double-tap strike on the northeastern city of Kharkiv that killed five first responders. Though Russia denied responsibility for the bombing of the monastery, instead blaming a US-made interceptor missile launched by Ukrainian forces, The Guardian reported via Telegram that fragments of two Russian one-way attack drones had been found amid debris at the site.

Among the other structures damaged in Kyiv were the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studios, which lost its irreplaceable collection of roughly 100,000 costumes, and the Art Arsenal exhibition space. The House of Organ and Chamber Music in Dnipro and the Kharkiv Art Museum—home to some 25,000 works of Ukrainian, Russian, and Western European art—were also harmed.

The New York Times noted that the attack occurred the same day that Ukraine participated in an accession conference with ministers of the European Union, marking a step forward in its effort to join the EU and gain protection against Russia.
