Phillips Collection Receives Historic $15 Million Gift

ThePhillips Collectionin Washington, DC, has announced that it is the recipient of a seismic $15 million gift from the Sherman Fairchild Foundation, the largest in the institution’s 105-year history. The foundation has donated regularly and significantly to the Phillips since the 1990s, with pastgiftssupporting a variety of initiatives as well as the 2006 renovation and expansion of its conservation studio. The recent gift was shepherded by museum director Jonathan P. Binstock as part of the museum’s 2025–29 strategic plan and includes $11.75 million earmarked for the institution’s endowment, allowing long-term planning and ensuring coverage of maintenance and staffing.
The Phillips plans to use some of the money to expand programming to engage diverse audiences, directing funds to the Phillips@THEARC, the institution’s satellite space in southeast DC, where its recently announced Art-Play-Practice immersive installation series will debut with a work inspired by Sam Gilliam’s 1972Broad Cape, a key work in its collection. The museum will additionally update its facilities and enhance its core data and digital asset management systems.
