Sweden’s minister for culture, Parisa Liljestrand, at a June 8 press conference announcedTone Hansenas the next director ofModerna Museet, Stockholm. Hansen arrives to the institution from Munch, the museum in Oslo devoted to the work of Edvard Munch, where she has served as director since 2022. She previously helmed the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, also in Oslo. Hansen will step into her new role on September 1, succeeding Gitte Ørskou, who led the museum for seven years; Hansen’s tenure is projected to end on August 31, 2032.
“Tone Hansenis an experienced museum director and is deeply rooted in the culture and art world. She has extensive experience of working with visions and strategy, museum development and new perspectives on museums’ role in society,” said Liljestrand in a statement. “I’m convinced that she will help boostModerna Museet’s standing in the museum world, both nationally and internationally.”
“I approach this appointment with both pride and humility,” said Hansen in a statement. “My ambition is to shape a new direction for Moderna Museet and to build a stronger, more innovative and knowledge-driven organization within one of the world’s most influential museums, with art, architecture, design and audiences at its heart.”
Moderna Museet focuses on art and architecture dating from 1900 to the present. At the beginning of 2026, Moderna Museet absorbed the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design (ArkDes) and the Public Art Agency Sweden, with the combined three entities forming a single government agency named Moderna Museet.
