Arts Collective will open a newarts centerinNorthampton, England on May 1st with an exhibition from Northamptonshire-born artist Rose Finn-Kelcey. The planned complex is the result of a £5.2m renovation ofNorthampton’s municipal offices and town hall annex, and will include 17 artist studios, several community spaces, and a new gallery.

The central feature of the complex will be “The Northampton Rooms,” a collection of public spaces designed by artist Giles Round as a “living work of art.”

“This opening marks a major new chapter for Arts Collective and for Northampton,” Emer Grant, the Artistic Director of Arts Collective, said in a statement. “As an artist-led institution, our focus is on creating the conditions for artists to develop ambitious work, supported by meaningful collaboration with communities and partners. Our new home at 24 Guildhall Road is a clear commitment to this focus, and marks a national moment for regional spaces — an opportunity to recognise the value of artists and their contribution to contexts that have too often been overlooked”

“What we are interested in is not simply attracting artists from metropolitan centers into regional contexts, but in rethinking how institutions can create the conditions for long-term artistic life,” Grant told the Art Newspaper. “This means developing models where artists are able to live, work, and contribute within communities over time, and where local economies are meaningfully connected to artistic production.”
