The world’s first museum ofAIarts, Dataland, issetto open to the public on June 20th. Conceived by new media artistRefik Anadoland his partner, artist and cultural researcher Efsun Erkiliç, theLos Angeles-located institution has been under construction for over two and a half years. Its flagship location will be within The Grand LA development, a high-rise complex designed by architectFrank Gehry.

Dataland willreportedlycontain five immersive galleries, and a ten-thousand square foot space dedicated to equipment supporting the AI “Large Nature Model” Anadol’s studio developed to “power” the displays.

“Dataland welcomes people of all backgrounds with unparalleled experiences utilizing machine learning and the latest sensory and visualization technologies at a scale and quality never before realized,” the museum’s website reads. “In pursuit of its mission, Dataland combines online access and learning platforms, acts as a public repository for large-scale, nature-focused data sets, and will build a comprehensive collection of AI art.”

The museum’s inaugural exhibition, “Machine Dreams: Rainforest,” was inspired by a trip Anadol and Erkiliç took to the Amazon. Dataland claims its displays will immerse visitors in a “machine-generated sensory experience” of the natural world.

“AI art is a part of digital art, meaning a lineage that uses software, data and computers to create a form of art,” Anadol told the LA Times. “I know that many artists don’t want to disclose their technologies, but for me, AI means possibilities. And possibilities come with responsibilities. We have to disclose exactly where our data comes from.”
