Marian Goodman Gallery Hits “Pause” in Los Angeles

Marian Goodman Gallerywill temporarily halt operations at its Los Angeles branch after its current show, an exhibition of the work of Tacita Dean, closes on April 25,Artnewsreports. Per a statement sent to the platform, the gallery’s four partners—Rose Lord, Junette Teng, Emily-Jane Kirwan, and Leslie Nolen—are “consolidating programming to our historic homes in New York and Paris. Our programming will continue to be anchored in these two global art capitals, advancing the transatlantic dialogue between the United States and Europe that has been foundational to our gallery since its inception in 1977.”

The partners stopped short of saying the gallery was closing, instead offering the news that they would “evaluate the next phase for the space” and “maintain our presence in Los Angeles and in cities internationally through special projects, art fairs, and museum exhibitions in support of our artists and clients.”

Marian Goodman opened its Los Angeles branch in a disused Hollywood warehouse in 2023. Since then, Blum, Clearing, and Tanya Bonakdar have all folded their tents and left the City of Angels. Though the closure of these well-established galleries would seem to contrast with the recent high-profile opening of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s new Peter Zumthor-designed galleries, the city’s art scene has been subject to many of the same forces that have roiled the larger art world—increasing costs, shifts in buying habits and tastes, and global uncertainty.

“The ongoing market volatility has forced many galleries to take a hard look at how they allocate their resources,” wrote Lord and Teng in an email to Artnews. “The Gallery has a long history with the city’s artists and institutions. We are proud of our contributions to LA’s art ecology over the past few years and we plan to remain active in LA through fairs, special projects, and institutional partnerships.”
