Saint Louis’s Counterpublic Triennial Reveals Artist List for Third Edition

Organizers of theCounterpublic Triennialhave announced the forty-seven artists and collectives participating in the Saint Louis event’s third iteration, to take place September 12–December 12. Curated by the five-person team of Jordan Carter, Raphael Fonseca, Stefanie Hessler, Nora N. Khan, and Wanda Nanibush, this year’s edition is titled “Coyote Time” after a commission by Alice Bucknell, a video game set within Saint Louis’s City Museum. The phrase refers to the brief moment in gameplay when a player must decide whether to forge ahead or retreat to safety. In that spirit, participants will explore issues such as climate, technology, education, and immigration.

Among the exhibiting artists are such heavy hitters as Rebecca Belmore, Carolina Caycedo, Tony Cokes, Nicholas Galanin, Petrit Halilaj,  Max Hooper Schneider, Glenn Ligon, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch. Participating Saint Louis area–based artists and collectives include Chris Carl, Dail Chambers, Jamie Lee Harris, Occupy Vacancy, and People’s Art and Recreation Center (PARC).

A dozen site-responsive works will appear along the Mississippi riverfront on either side of the city’s iconic Gateway Arch, including major new commissions by Bellmore and Ligon. Hooper Schneider will present work in a onetime public aquarium, while Cooper Jacoby and Li-Yi Fan, among others, will show work incorporating emerging technologies.

“The ‘Coyote Time’ artist list is decidedly diasporic in scope, reflecting a global outlook while remaining rooted in St. Louis at a moment marked by renewed borders and divisions,” said James McAnally, Counterpublic’s executive and artistic director, in a statement. “Artists and collectives are drawn equally from the exhibition’s immediate neighborhoods and the Global South, bringing multilingual and multifaceted perspectives to questions of civic structures, migration, identity, and technology. Across nearly fifty commissions, ‘Coyote Time’ takes a speculative and socially oriented approach to the moment.”
