Per apress release, Beijing’sUllens Center for Contemporary Art(UCCA) has announced that it will open a new outpost in Guangzhou—this will be the first ancillary location for the institution to be situated in South China. The new art space,UCCA OneM Center for Contemporary Art, is the result of a partnership between UCCA and the OneM Center for Contemporary Art in Guangzhou.
“As a city defined by its energy and openness, Guangzhou is a vibrant setting for contemporary art,” Kong Lingyi, chief executive of UCCA and the UCCA Foundation, said in a statement. “Through this partnership, we look forward to building lasting connections with local communities and practitioners to bring the best in art to a wider audience.”
UCCA has previously opened satellite outposts around China, in Beidaihe, Shanghai, and Yixing City.
The aim of the new institution will be to foster dialogues within the contemporary art community located in the larger Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. UCCA OneM’s programming will be informed by regional conditions and favor international perspectives. Additionally, selected exhibitions will travel between or be co-organized by other UCCA museums, the release stated.
UCCA OneM is slated to open in 2027, and it will take over the premises currently occupied by OneM in the Pazhou Central Business District Cluster. The building’s design was inspired by the concept of the “Dance of the Pearl River,” and it features a red spiral staircase that was recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest unsupported staircase of its kind.
