The organizers ofManifestahavenamedthe 106 artists and collectives participating in the nomadic biennial’s sixteenth iteration, set to open June 21 in four cities in Germany’s Ruhr region. German and Turkish artists each account for roughly 25 percent of the cohort, who collectively represent thirty countries. Poland will have a strong presence as well. Sixty-four artists will present new commissions.
The biennial is being curated by an intergenerational eight-person team led by Barcelona-based architect Josep Bohigas with Turkish-born, German-raised curator Gürsoy Doğtaş. It will take place across a total of twelve decommissioned postwar churches in Bochum, Essen, Duisburg and Gelsenkirchen and will run through October 4.
Among the artists and collectives presenting new commissions are Katharina Fritsch, Mona Hatoum, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, Wilhelm Sasnal, Superflex, and Luc Tuymans. Other participating artists include Halil Altındere, Katarzyna Kozyra, Alicja Kwade, and Nil Yalter.
“The curatorial concept of Manifesta 16 Ruhr is based on a dialogical approach,” said the organizers in a press release. “Art emerges through exchange—between international and local positions, between artistic practice and societal questions, and between existing structures and new forms of use. The invited participants bring together a wide range of artistic methods, disciplines and experiences.”
