Yuko Mohri Wins 2025 Calder Prize

TheCalder Foundationhas announced multidisciplinary Japanese artistYuko Mohrias the winner of the 2025Calder Prize. The honor is bestowed biannually on “a contemporary artist whose innovative work reflects the continued legacy of Calder’s genius.” Mohri, known for her installations incorporating sound, fruit, found objects, and kinetic elements, will receive $50,000 in cash and a three-month residency at Atelier Calder in Saché, France. As well, one of her works will be placed in a public collection yet to be named.
Born and raised in Kanagawa, Mohri cut her teeth in that city’s burgeoning punk scene and fronted a band before attending Tama Art University in Tokyo, where she built a DIY magnetic organ as her BFA project. Since receiving her MA in intermedia art from Tokyo University of the arts in 2004, Mohri has gained renown for maximalist installations that are frequently ephemeral in nature and evolve in response to their surround. She represented Japan at the Sixtieth Venice Biennale, in 2024, where her exhibition, “Compose,” featured an installation which she wired and digitally filtered decaying fruit to produce acoustic sounds through speakers and on a drum. Mohri this year will be the subject of solo exhibitions at Miami’s Bass Museum and London’s Barbican Centre. An exhibition of her work, her first in the US, opens this month at New York’s Tanya Bonakdar Gallery. “Yuko’s work is at once enigmatic and inviting, successfully drawing viewers into real-time experiences influenced by many random factors—time, space, and unseen forces such as gravity, sound, air, and light,” said Alexander Rower, a cofounder and the president of the Calder Foundation, in a statement. “While it is easy to draw parallels between Yuko’s work and Calder’s, her aesthetic voice is powerfully singular.”
