TheBrooklyn Museumhas namedRobert Wiesenbergeras the New York institution’s Barbara and John Vogelstein Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. Wiesenberger arrives to the museum from the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, where he has been curator of contemporary projects since 2018. He will begin his new role on March 2. Among his responsibilities will be developing “The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition,” a large recurring group show inaugurated in 2024.
“We are delighted to welcome Robert to our esteemed curatorial team at theBrooklyn Museum,” said the museum’s director, Anne Pasternak, in a statement. “His expertise and vision will undoubtedly expand and enrich the stories we are able to tell. We look forward to his insightful contributions as we continue to deepen our cultural offerings.”
While at the Clark, Wiesenberger organized a series of milestone exhibitions featuring emerging and midcareer artists, among them Yuji Agematsu, Eddie Rodolfo Aparicio, Tauba Auerbach, Pia Camil, Carolina Caycedo, David-Jeremiah, Tomm El-Saieh, Kathia St. Hilaire, Christine Howard Sandoval, Lin May Saeed, Erin Shirreff, and Kandis Williams, many in their first solo institutional exhibitions. For the past seven years, Wiesenberger has been a lecturer in the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art, an MA program in which he has taught seminars and workshops on contemporary art and advised student theses. He was previously a critic at the Yale School of Art and a curatorial fellow at the Harvard Art Museums. Wiesenberger holds a BA from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. “It’s a tremendous honor to join a museum known for its audacious exhibitions and its service to a truly extraordinary community,” said Wiesenberger in a statement. “Brooklyn is home to more creative energy than almost anywhere on earth, and I am humbled and thrilled to be a part of one of its most essential institutions.”
