Flag Art Foundation and Serpentine Announce New $270,000 Contemporary Art Prize

London’sSerpentineand the New York–basedFLAG Art Foundationhave announced the establishment of the UK’s largest contemporary art prize. The Serpentine xFLAG Art FoundationPrize will be awarded biannually over a span of ten years to five international artists, each of whom will receive £200,000 (about $270,000). Recipients of the honor, which is intended to foster collaboration between the US and the UK, will be given a solo exhibition at both galleries. The inaugural prize is to be presented in 2026, with the winner’s exhibition opening at the Serpentine in fall 2027 before traveling to FLAG’s New York space in spring 2028.

Winners will be chosen via a nomination process involving a rotating panel of art historians, curators, and artists. To be considered, artists must have been exhibiting professionally for under ten years and “actively working to grow and sustain a strong record of international museum and gallery exhibitions, including gallery representation, honors, awards, art critic reviews, grants and publications,” per a press release.

“This partnership deepens our shared mission to forge new connections between artists and audiences while nurturing transatlantic dialogue,” Serpentine CEO Bettina Korek in a statement. “The alliance provides global artists with the space and support to expand their practice, inspired by Zaha Hadid’s enduring spirit of experimentation,” she added, referring to the late designer of the inaugural Serpentine pavilion.

“FLAG has built a brand around the contemporary artist space working with artists, collectors, institutions, fostering dialogue,” FLAG founder Glenn Fuhrman told the New York Times. “This is a continuation of that.” The prize is the second such collaboration for FLAG, which in 2018 inaugurated the Suzanne Deal Booth / FLAG Art Foundation Prize alongside Texas’s Contemporary Austin.
