ThePhiladelphia Art Museum(PhAM) has namedDaniel H. Weiss, a formerdirector and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Artin New York, as its new director and CEO, effective December 1. Weiss, currently a professor at John Hopkins University, replacesSasha Suda, who wasforced outearlier this month following a controversial rebrand of the institution, formerly thePhiladelphia Museum of Art, and issuing the museumfor dismissing her “without a valid basis.”
“We are extraordinarily fortunate to have someone of Dan Weiss’s caliber and experience step into this critical role,” said PhAM board chair Ellen Caplan in a statement. “Dan’s proven track record of museum leadership, his deep understanding of the field, and his ability to navigate complex institutional challenges make him ideally suited to provide stability and strategic direction during this critical period for the art museum.”
Weiss is currently Homewood Professor of the Humanities and senior advisor to the provost for the Arts at Johns Hopkins University. He led the Met from 2015 to 2023. From 2013 to 2015, he was president of Haverford College, and he occupied the same role at Lafayette College from 2005 to 2013. He earlier chaired the Art History department at Johns Hopkins and served as dean of the university’s Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in medieval and Byzantine art from Johns Hopkins, an MBA from Yale University, and a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University.
“The Philadelphia Art Museum is one of America’s great cultural treasures, with an extraordinary collection, a dedicated staff, and deep connections to its community,” said Weiss in a statement. “It is a privilege and an honor to serve during this important moment.”
PhAM has said that Weiss will occupy his new roles through at least 2028.
