The organizers of theSingapore Biennalehave announced the more than eighty artists and collectives set to participate in the event’s 2025 iteration, to open October 31 and run through March 29, 2026. The theme of the Biennale, which coincides with Singapore’s sixtieth birthday, is “pure intention.” “Within this framework, art functions as a lens to view the evolution of Singapore’s urban and social environment. It demonstrates how art reframes the everyday, inviting us to reconsider the people, spaces, and layered histories that shape who we are, both individually and as a society,” said Biennale officials in a press release.
The Biennale will be scattered across venues throughout Singapore, ranging from MRT stations to shopping centers, and will include artists from Argentina, Australia, Germany, India, South Korea, Türkiye, and the United States as well as a healthy contingent from Singapore and South Asia. More than thirty new commissions will be on view, including Vietnamese American artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen’sTemple, a massive installation made from defused unexploded ordnance discovered in central Vietnam’s Quảng Trị province; and an installation by Thai artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Singapore artist Guo-Liang Tan comprising a kinetic outdoor installation based on the scrolled theater backdrops appearing in Weerasethakul’s films that will appear in Singapore’s historic Rail Corridor.
“SB2025 provides a unique opportunity for us to reflect on the many ways our city has been shaped by its architecture and systems, as well as the people who move through it. By inviting diverse voices to respond to themes of rapid urban development, historical contradictions and speculative futures withpure intention, this edition unpacks Singapore’s multifaceted realities within global narratives,” said curators Duncan Bass, Hsu Fang-Tze, Ong Puay Khim, and Selene Yap in a joint statement. “In activating spaces that are part of our daily rhythms, we hope to foster greater dialogue across cultures and communities, sparking moments of connection and curiosity towards the cosmopolitan futures we share.”
