Drawing Center Names Olivia Shao Inaugural Burger Collection and TOY Meets Art Curator

The Drawing Center in New York has announced the creation of a new curatorial position in collaboration with Hong Kong’s Burger Collection, a private collection of contemporary European, Asian, and American art. As well, the museum has already filled the post: Olivia Shao will serve as the first Burger Collection & TOY Meets Art Curator. In her new role, Shao will be charged with organizing exhibitions in Hong Kong and New York over a three-year span beginning in January 2024 and concluding in January 2027. “The Drawing Center is excited to add a new voice to its curatorial program, one with an international perspective,” said Laura Hoptman, the Drawing Center’s executive director, in a statement. “We are equally excited to partner with an extraordinary collection of contemporary art based in Hong Kong, a city whose cultural vibrancy mirrors and complements that of New York.”RelatedVINCENT HONORÉ (1975-2023)FORGOTTEN BOTTICELLI PAINTING RECOVERED FROM PRIVATE HOME Shao, once described by theNew Yorkeras a “curatorial alchemist,” has deep knowledge of both the Hong Kong and New York art scenes, having been independently organizing shows in the latter city since 2009.

She is perhaps best known for curating “Of Mythic Worlds” at the Drawing Center this past spring; theshowexamined the way “rituals, myths, traditions, ideologies, and beliefs can intersect across cultures, histories, and time periods.” Also this past spring, Shao curated “Looking Back: 13th Edition White Columns Annual” at White Columns, New York. She is currently at work on an exhibition for Hong Kong’s Empty Gallery set to open in March 2024. “I look forward to this exciting collaboration with the Drawing Center and with Olivia Shao, whose innovative curatorial vision echoes our collection’s global and intercultural philosophy,” said Monique Burger in a statement..
