Anonymous Was a Woman(AWAW) in collaboration with theNew York Foundation for the Arts(NYFA) has named the 2025 recipients of funds from AWAW’s Environmental Art Grants (EAG) program,Artnewsreports. Twenty-nine projects led by women-identifying artists from across the United States and its territories whose work addresses ecological concerns will receive grants of up to $20,000 apiece, with funding totaling $521,125. The winners were chosen from among a pool of 1,004 applicants and include those whose projects are located in Guam, Mexico, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Korea, as well as those in the US.
AWAW, which was founded in 1996, has historically funded work by women-identifying artists over the age of forty and has to date disbursed more than $10 million in unrestricted grants. The EAG grant was established in 2022 and grew out of AWAW founder Susan Unterberg’s work with past grantee Jeanne Silverthorne on the artist’s 2021 climate-change-centered bookDisaster Diary. The program has thus far awarded $1.4 million to eighty-two projects.
“We are living in a time of multiple crises—but we must not be overwhelmed or paralyzed from taking action. Environmental action is more urgently needed than ever before, and artists have a powerful role to play in helping us see, feel, and respond to the crises around us,” said Unterberg in a statement. “The 2025 AWAW Environmental Art Grants recipients are not only illuminating the profound challenges we face, but also imagining new paths of resilience, justice, and collective care. Their projects remind us that art can be both a call to action and a source of hope at a time when both are essential.”
