A visitor to theWhitney Museum of American Artdied on July 30 after falling from a height at the New York institution. The NYPD, responding to a 911 call to the museum around 5:30 p.m., shortly before it closed, discovered a thirty-four-year-old man “unconscious and unresponsive” in the nine-story building’s plaza, “with injuries indicative of falling from an elevated position.”Artnewsreported that Whitney director Scott Rothkopf told staffers in an email that the man had jumped. The city medical examiner’s office is investigating the matter.
“This is something that deeply touches our community. Moments like this can affect each of us differently,” wrote Rothkopf. “Please take care of yourselves and one another and know that support is available if you need it. OPC is working to provide resources tomorrow and in the days ahead.”
“Authorities are still determining the details, but we are devastated that a visitor lost their life,” said the Whitney in a statement. “Our thoughts are with their family and friends, and with our staff, visitors and neighbors who were nearby when it occurred.”
The victim has not yet been publicly identified, pending notification of the family. Hyperallergic reported that the Whitney would remain closed on Thursday, July 31.
