TheArt NewspaperhasnamedJulia Michalskato the role of global editor in chief and has appointedBenjamin Suttoneditor in chief, Americas. The art media company, whichsince 2023 has been ownedby Hong Kong–based financial services conglomerate AMTD Group, additionally announced its intent to expand into markets including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, Los Angeles, Miami, and Mexico City. Both Michalska and Sutton will serve as members of a global editorial committee tasked with monitoring the publication’s global content and quality.
Michalska has been with theArt Newspaperfor eighteen years, rising from editorial assistant to deputy editor and, most recently, interim co-editor, a role she assumed after editor in chief Alison Colestepped downahead of AMTD’s acquisition of the publication. She is credited with playing a crucial part in theArt Newspaper’s digital evolution and with inaugurating a slew of newsletters and the podcastThe Week in Art.As EIC, she will oversee theArt Newspaper’s print and digital publications, and will spearhead the media company’s global editorial strategy, focusing on the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia.
Sutton joined the Art Newspaper over three years ago as editor, Americas, and has since assisted the publication in expanding its presence in Canada and Latin America, while helming its coverage of US news. Too, he aided in the launch of its first bilingual English-Spanish special edition in Mexico earlier this year. As editor in chief, Americas, he will lead the Art Newspaper’s expansion in North and South America. Sutton brings two decades of experience to the role, having earlier served as news editor at Hyperallergic, Artnet News, and Artinfo.com, and as lead editor at Artsy.
The Art Newspaper was founded in 1990 as a monthly print and frequent digital publication by Italian publisher Umberto Allemandi and British journalist Anna Somers Cocks, working off the model of Allemandi’s successful Italian art monthly Il Giornale dell’Arte. Allemandi in 2014 sold the publication to Russian collector Inna Bazhenova, who ran it for nearly a decade before selling it to AMTD.
