Dib Bangkok, Thailand’s first major museum of international contemporary art, will open this December in downtown Bangkok. The institution, whose name translates to “raw” or “natural, authentic state” in English, will house the collection of businessmanPetch Osathanugrah(1960–2023) and will occupy a 71,000-square-foot building that served as a steel warehouse in the 1980s and has been redesigned by Kulapat Yantrasast of WHY Architecture, the firm overseeing the major overhaul of the Louvre in Paris. The three-story museum will boast a sawtooth roof and will comprise eleven galleries—one of which is cone-shaped and known as “The Chapel”—as well as a 15,000-square-foot central courtyard and an outdoor sculpture garden.
“At Dib Bangkok, we see art as the ripest fruit of human imagination—something to be savored, questioned, and shared,” said Purat “Chang” Osathanugrah, the late collector’s son, in a statement. “But more than that, we’re building Dib Bangkok to be a true creative oasis, a bridge between Thailand, Southeast Asia, and the global art scene—where deep art circles and the simply curious can come together. Bangkok, with all its energy, creativity, and unstoppable spirit, has long been overdue for an anchor to its contemporary art scene that matches its vibrancy—somewhere that celebrates art in a way as dynamic and bold as the city itself.”
Petch Osathanugrah, who until 2022 served as the CEO of his family’s beverage company, Osotspa, was a vibrant presence on the Thai contemporary art scene, which he helped bring to international attention. The museum’s collection numbers roughly one thousand pieces, with more than two hundred international artists represented. Dib Bangkok’s inaugural exhibition is being overseen by the institution’s director, Miwako Tezuka, who earlier held curatorial roles at New York’s Japan Society and Asia Society, and curator Ariana Chaivaranon. Carrying the theme “invisible presence,” it will honor Osathanugrah’s memory with works by artists including Montien Boonma, Lee Bul, Anselm Kiefer, and Alicja Kwade.
