Expo Chicagohas revealed the full list of those taking part in this year’s edition, set to take place April 24–27 at the Navy Pier’s Festival Hall. The upcoming edition, which will feature more than 170 galleries from thirty-six countries and ninety-three cities, is the second to be held under the auspices of international art fair company Frieze, whichpurchasedExpo Chicago in July 2023. Too, it is the first to welcome twenty Korean galleries, whose presence reflects a new partnership between Frieze and the Galleries Association of Korea (Gaok).
“As we enter the second year of Expo Chicago as part of Frieze, we are proud to expand on new initiatives, including a significant collaboration with the Galleries Association of Korea, made possible through Frieze’s global reach,” said Kristell Chadé, executive director for Friezefairs, in a statement. “We look forward to presenting a dynamic selection of artists and exhibitors, while exploring how the crosspollination between our fairs can add value to each, fostering new connections and opportunities across regions.”
“We plan to support twenty major galleries in Korea to enter the Chicago artmarketon behalf of the association and Korea in various ways together with the government,” said Gaok president Hwang Dalseung in a statement. “This event was based on the synergy between Kiaf Seoul and Frieze Seoul, which have already created a new model of win-win through fair-to-fair collaboration in the contemporary art market, where various entities are collaborating in various ways, and this time we will take the first step towards the internationalization of Korean art distribution with Expo Chicago.”
More than one hundred exhibitors who participated in the event last year are returning. Among these are New York’s 56 Henry, Chicago’s Corbett vs. Dempsey, Detroit’s Library Street Collective, São Paulo’s Nara Roesler, Cape Town’s Southern Guild, and Nassau’s TERN. More than fifty galleries are making their debut at the Expo, including Pittsburgh’s april april; Portland, Oregon’s ILY2; Belo Horizonte’s Mitre; London’s Pippy Houldsworth Gallery; and New York’s Two Palms.
In addition to the main “Galleries” section, the Expo will feature special sections, including the brand-new “Contrast” section, curated by Lauren Haynes, head curator of Governors Island Arts in New York; and “Exposure,” organized for the second year running by Rosario Güiraldes, curator of visual arts at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and featuring solo and two-artist presentations represented by galleries that have been in business ten years or less. The “In/Situ” section, curated by Jessica S. Hong, who was recently named chief curator at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri, will present large-scale and site-specific installations, while the “Profile” section will showcase major projects by a single artist or collective. The “Editions + Books” section will feature artist books, editions, and prints, and the “Special Exhibitions” section will feature presentations and site-specific work by nonprofit organizations.
