In the late 1980s, the youth TV program "Zebra" aired on Leningrad Television in the USSR — its distinctive feature was that it showed three-minute clips from the film "Star Wars" translated by Leonid Volodarsky. Initially, ten-minute clips were shown, but later copyright issues arose. The program's editors then wrote a letter to the film's director, George Lucas, asking for permission to show the saga to Soviet children in segments of a length he deemed appropriate.
