(1935 Halle/Saale - 2016 Niebüll) "Grey and Blue". Original title 1974. This composition, created in 1974, consists of two vertically parallel bands on a white-grey background. Limiting himself to straight, equally wide lines or bands on monochrome backgrounds, Brandt belongs to the most famous, radical, and ascetic artists of Concrete Art. From 1955 to 1961, Brandt studied at the Berlin University of the Arts under Ernst Schumacher. The encounter with young American painting, particularly with Barnett Newman, had a significant influence on his work, which he also directly experienced during a scholarship in New York in 1975/76. From 1982 to 2001, Brandt was a professor of textile design at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts. In 1995, he received the Fred Thiel Prize for painting. Works by Brandt can be found in many German museums. Oil on canvas; signed and dated (1974) on the reverse, annotated and titled on an old label. 60 cm x 100 cm. Framed or in a studio frame.
