The painting depicts a wealthy, successful lady who has dedicated her entire life to her career, chasing after money and fashion—as we can see from her clothing and the strict expression on her face. But when she finally acquired everything she had been pursuing, already at an older age, she realizes with sorrow in her soul—it is visible in her eyes—that she missed the most important thing: time for life itself. In reality, she did not live the life she wanted, but the one that would define her status in society. She was afraid that people would think badly of her, that she would seem like a failure, and other things unacceptable to society. Realizing all this, she is overcome with melancholy.
With this painting, I want to say that there is no need to chase after something; you need to live, regardless of status, boundaries, and stereotypes. You need to live your own life—that is the happiness everyone is searching for. Do not live for the opinions of others, do not try to prove your success to them and justify your life choices. Life is given only once!
