Sports in Soviet Porcelain
Description

Matveev, Mogilevsky, Notkin. Russian Museum! LARGE FORMAT!

This publication is dedicated to the embodiment of the theme of sports in Soviet visual art.

The album of illustrations is preceded by scholarly articles that present a broad panorama of the reflection of this theme in works of decorative and applied arts, sculpture, and graphics. A separate article is devoted to the collecting of art objects—porcelain items associated with physical culture motifs.

Supplemented with a detailed catalog of Soviet ceramics and biographies of the artists whose works are featured in the publication.

At the exhibition “Sport in Soviet Porcelain, Graphics, Sculpture,” about 350 works of domestic ceramics (porcelain, faience, majolica) from the 1920s to the early 1990s were presented from the collections of the Russian Museum, the State Hermitage, and private collections.

The exhibition was held from April 25, 2018 to July 23, 2018 at the Russian Museum. This book (catalog) was published for this exhibition.

The first three sections of the exhibition were dedicated to the country’s main porcelain manufacturers: the Leningrad Porcelain Factory named after M. V. Lomonosov, the Dmitrov Porcelain Factory, and the Dulevo Porcelain Factory named after the newspaper “Pravda.” The fourth section included works from all other, less large-scale but no less interesting manufacturers (Pervomaisky Porcelain Factory, “Proletary” Factory, Konakovo Faience Factory named after M. I. Kalinin, the “Keramik” and “Progress” artels, and others).

The exhibition made it possible to trace how the theme of sports and a healthy lifestyle changed under the influence of the tasks set by the times for the art of ceramics, how this or that sporting event (Spartakiads, Olympic Games, Goodwill Games) was reflected, and what new artistic motifs and techniques were used by artists in different periods of the country’s history. For the first time, the theme of sports in porcelain is covered so fully—more than 90 authors’ works were presented at the exhibition.

The ceramics on sports themes were complemented by works of Soviet graphics and sculpture from the collection of the Russian Museum.
