In the Russian Empire, tea was among the most prominent colonial goods. As a rule, tea was delivered to factories in sealed crates at the border, where it was distributed into branded paper packages, metal, faience, porcelain, or glass tea caddies, and then sealed with an official banderole, which served as a mark of product quality.
