In 1935, Franz Goebel's grandson found new images for porcelain figurines. The famous HUMMEL figurines spread across Europe. They have made Goebel a unique and renowned "Hummelwerk" for many years. In 1971, the Goebel company celebrated its 100th anniversary. The highlight of the centenary celebration was the unveiling of a monument in the form of a Hummel boy figurine
On May 21, 1909, a girl named Berta (Berta Hummel) was born into the family of businessman Adolf Hummel in the Bavarian town of Massing. From early childhood, Berta was passionately drawing, and at the age of 12 she was accepted into a school for girls in Simbach, run by the sisters of the Catholic order Englische Fräulein. There she created her first illustrations for a book by Friedrich W. Webers. Her paintings so amazed the sisters that they sent several copies to a publishing house in Munich specializing in religious art books. It released Berta's works as postcards, which were very popular in those years. In 1934, a collection of Berta's drawings was published
Shortly after, Franz Goebel, the owner of a porcelain production facility, saw these postcards in one of the Munich stores. Goebel was just looking for a new artistic line for his factory. He proposed producing porcelain figurines based on Berta's drawings. In 1935, at the Leipzig Trade Fair, the figurines were a resounding success
Porcelain figurines continued to be produced in Germany until almost the end of 2008
M.I. Hummel signed her works not only with her name but sometimes with an image of a bumblebee – a kind of "coat of arms," a symbol of her surname
