On the left, the two-line inscription "$ 50" denotes 50 pesos, and the digits "1985 M" (with a circle symbol above the letter "M") indicate the year of issue. Below, in a shaped horizontal tablet, is the inscription "MEXICO 86" - the year of the World Cup. Along the lower edge of the coin is the inscription "COPA MUNDIAL DE FUTBOL", which translates from Spanish as "World Cup of Football".

The central part features the coat of arms of Mexico. The coat of arms depicts an eagle sitting on a cactus, devouring a snake. Along the rim, on the left, top, and right, is the inscription "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS", which translates from Spanish as "United Mexican States". Along the edge of the coin on the left, bottom, and right is a stylized depiction of a wreath with oak leaves on the left and flowers on the right. The wreath is tied at the bottom with a shaped ribbon, from which an Aztec ornament descends downwards. The coin's edge has decorative raised dots.
