Along the lower edge arc is the inscription "L. 500" - 500 lire.

The central part presents a relief image of the coat of arms of the reigning Pontiff Paul VI (Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini), in the form of a spindle-shaped shield. The central role is given to two crossed keys - a symbol of the Vatican. The keys symbolically represent the spiritual authority of the Pope as the Vicar of Christ on Earth. Above them is a three-tiered crown executed in the form of a beehive, topped with a cross - the Papal tiara. The shield's surface bears three heraldic lilies, positioned above a stylized depiction of a six-peaked hill. Along the coin's edge from left to right runs a Latin text "* PAVLVS * VI * P. M. A. IX * MCMLXXI *", which translates to "* PAUL * VI * SUPREME PONTIFF A. 9 * 1971 *", where "A. 9" denotes the 9th year of the pontificate (reign), and the numerals "MCMLXXI", according to the Gregorian calendar, indicate the issue date "1971". Along the rim at the bottom is a two-line Italian inscription "T. GISMONDI" - denoting the initials of the artist Tomas Gismondi and "G. MONASSI" - the initials of the engraver Guerrino Mattia Monassi.
