    Along the left and right edges of the coin are two crossed branches, tied together with a ribbon. In the center, the inscription in two lines '5 HELLER' is struck. Below the denomination is the letter J – the mint mark of the Hamburg Mint.

    Along the edge of the coin from left to right runs the text 'DEUTSCH OSTAFRIKA', which translates from German as 'German East Africa'. In the center is a crown – the symbol of the monarchs of the German Empire. From its lower part, two ribbons extend to the right and left. Along the rim below the ribbon is the year of mintage, 1908.
