Left: a portrait of the poet at work. To the right of it, the inscription '850 YEARS' in two lines, and further to the right, along the outer rim of the coin, the inscription in ornate letters 'NIZAMI GANJAVI'.

In the upper part of the coin is the State Emblem of the USSR, encircled by a ribbon (15 turns), below it the letters 'USSR', slightly lower the denomination of the coin, the numeral '1' and below it the word 'RUBLE'. At the edge of the lower part is the year of mintage '1991'.
