In the central part, the denomination is indicated by a large numeral 1, below which is the text inscription 'HRYVNIA'. On the sides, there is a plant ornament of a grapevine with four grape clusters (two on each side).
Obverse
In the central part of the coin is an image of the trident – the small State Emblem of Ukraine. On either side of it are oak leaves with two ears of wheat. Three awns extend vertically upward from each ear. At the top of the coin is the inscription 'UKRAINE', and below the emblem is the coin's year of minting – '2001'.
