Reverse
The center of the coin is occupied by the monogram of Empress Catherine II Alekseyevna the Great. Above it is the crown of the Russian Empire. To the left of the monogram is the first part of the minting year — '17', and to the right the second — '88'. In the left part of the coin, along the edge of the rim, runs a laurel branch, and in the right part a palm branch. At the base, the branches are tied with a ribbon, the knot of which forms a bow. The coin's border is made in the form of denticles.
Obverse
The center of the obverse features a double-headed eagle — the coat of arms of the Russian Empire. Both heads of the eagle bear crowns, and a third, larger crown is placed between them. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow — an openwork shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a serpent with a long spear (the serpent's head is to the right). Around the shield is the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. In the eagle's right talon is a scepter, and below the talon the letter 'E'. In the left talon is an orb, and below the talon the letter 'M'. Together the letters indicate the Yekaterinburg Mint. Below the eagle, on a curved ribbon, is the inscription: FIVE • KOPEKS. The border is decorated with denticles.
