The denomination is indicated on three lines (with quatrefoils on the left and right), followed by the monetary unit and the year of issue: ✤ 3 ✤ KOPEYKI 1865. Below is a divider consisting of two ornamental lines with a dot between them. Immediately beneath it is the abbreviation 'E.M.' (Ekaterinburg Mint). - Obverse
The center of the obverse features the lesser coat of arms of the Russian Empire—a double-headed eagle. Both eagle heads bear crowns, with a third, larger crown between them. All three crowns are connected by a ribbon. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow—a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a dragon with a long spear (the dragon's head is to the left). The shield is surrounded by the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called. The coats of arms on the wings (four on each wing) are: Kazan, Polish, Taurida, Astrakhan, Siberian, Georgian, Kiev and Novgorod, Vladimir. In its right talon, the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left, an orb.
