  • Reverse
The center of the reverse is occupied by the coat of arms of the Russian Empire—a double-headed eagle, both heads of which bear crowns. A third, larger crown is placed above and between them. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow—a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a serpent with a long spear (the serpent's head is to the right). A chain with the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called surrounds the shield. In its right talon the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left an orb. Above the eagle is the year of mintage—'1779'. Around the state coat of arms, following the curve from right to left, is the inscription: ПОЛꙊПОЛТИННИКЪ (HALF POLTINA). The rim is toothed.
  • Obverse
The center of the obverse features the right-facing profile of the Russian Empress Catherine II. In the lower part, beneath the portrait, is the abbreviation 'С П Б' (Saint Petersburg Mint). Along the edge, following the curve from the lower left, is the inscription: Б•М•ЕКАТЕРИНА•II•IМП•ИСАМОД•ВСЕРОСС• (By the Grace of God, Catherine II, Empress and Autocrat of All Russia). The rim is toothed.
