  • Reverse
The center of the reverse is occupied by the coat of arms of the Russian Empire—a double-headed eagle, both heads of which bear crowns. A third, larger crown is positioned above and between them. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow—a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a serpent with a long spear (the serpent's head is to the right). The shield is encircled by the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle. In its right talon, the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left, an orb. Below the right talon is the letter 'I', and below the left, the letter 'S'. These are the initials of mintmaster Ivan Sabelnikov. Above the eagle is the year of mintage—'1796'. An inscription arcs from right to left around the state coat of arms: ПОЛꙊПОЛТИННИКЪ (HALF POLTINA). The edge is toothed.
  • Obverse
The center of the obverse features the right-facing profile of the Russian Empress Catherine II. In the lower part, beneath the portrait, is the abbreviation 'С П Б' (Saint Petersburg Mint). Along the edge, an inscription arcs from the lower left: Б•М•ЕКАТЕРИНА•II•IМП•ИСАМОД•ВСЕРОСС• (B•M•CATHERINE•II•EMPRESS•AND AUTOCRAT•OF ALL RUSSIA). The edge is toothed.
