In the central part, on the surface of a stylized map of the Arctic Basin, there is a symbolic compass rose; to the left of it – a walrus, to the right – tents of a polar station, a polar bear with a cub, above them – an airplane, below – the Northern Sea Route marked with dots and an icebreaker leading a convoy of ships; on the left, along the circle from top to bottom – a flying plane, oil platforms, three people with a meteorological balloon, a reindeer sled driver, industrial buildings, designations of metals from D.I. Mendeleev's Periodic Table of Chemical Elements and four crystals; at the bottom along the circumference – the inscription: 'INTERNATIONAL POLAR YEAR'.

In the upper part, along the rim arc, the coin's denomination 'ONE HUNDRED RUBLES' is inscribed; slightly below on the left, the metal designation from Mendeleev's periodic table Ag and fineness 925 are indicated; below in the center is the year of mintage '2007'; below on the right, the weight of pure precious metal '1000.0' and the mintmark (mint) 'SPMD' are struck.
