Reverse
The center of the reverse is occupied by the coat of arms of the Russian Empire—a double-headed eagle, both heads of which bear crowns. A third, larger crown is above and between them. On the eagle's chest is the coat of arms of Moscow—a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a serpent with a long spear (the serpent's head is to the right). The shield is surrounded by the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle. In its right talon, the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left, an orb. Below the right talon is the letter 'E', and below the left is the letter 'I'—the initials of mintmaster Egor (Georg) Ivanov. Above the eagle is the year of minting: '1764'. Around the eagle, facing inward, is the text: ПОЛУПОЛТИННИКЪ• (HALF POLTINA). The rim is decorated with denticles.
Obverse
The center of the obverse features the right-facing profile of the Russian Empress Catherine II. Along the edge, an inscription runs in an arc from the lower left: Б•М•ЕКАТЕРИНА•II•IМП•IСАМОД•ВСЕРОС (By the Grace of God, Catherine II, Empress and Autocrat of All Russia). On the sleeve's cuff are the letters 'T.I.', the initials of the engraver Timofei Ivanov. In the lower part, beneath the portrait, is the abbreviation 'М М Д' (Moscow Mint). The rim is decorated with denticles.
