    Against a background of inscriptions in Greek, a left-facing portrait of the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates occupies the right half. Below, along the rim, are the philosopher's name and lifespan 'ΣΩKPATHΣ 469-399 B.C.', a stylized acanthus leaf – the mark of the Athens Mint – and the mark of the engraver Georges Stamatopoulos – 'ΣTAM'.

    In the central part, against a background of inscriptions in Greek, is the coat of arms of Greece: a heraldic shield with a cross, surrounded by a laurel wreath.
