The denomination (with five-petal rosettes to the left and right) and monetary unit are indicated on two lines: ✿ 5 ✿ RUBLES Below is a decorative divider consisting of two opposing ornamental lines with a dotted rosette between them. Beneath the divider is the year of minting '1837'. Below the year is the abbreviation 'S.P.B.' (Saint Petersburg Mint). Between the edge and the center of the coin is a border of closely spaced dots. Between the edge and this border, a circular inscription reads: CHISTAGO ZOLOTA 1 ZOLOTNIK 39 DOLY (Pure Gold 1 Zolotnik 39 Dolias). The edge of the coin is decorated with a rim of sharp teeth pointing inward.
Obverse
The central part features the State Emblem of the Russian Empire – a double-headed eagle, its heads crowned with two coronets, and a third, larger crown above them. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow, depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback slaying a dragon with a spear. Surrounding the shield is the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. The titular coats of arms are displayed on the wings: on the right – Kazan, Astrakhan, and Siberian; on the left – Polish, Taurican, and Finnish. In its right talon the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left – an orb. Below the right talon is the letter 'P', below the left – the letter 'D'. These are the initials of mintmaster Pavel Danilov. The rim is decorated with denticles.
