The denomination (with five-leaf sprigs to the left and right) and monetary unit are indicated on two lines: ✿ 5 ✿ RUBLES Below is a decorative divider consisting of two opposing ornamental lines with a small raised eight-pointed star between them. Below the divider is the year of mintage "1847". Under the year is the abbreviation "S.P.B." (Saint Petersburg Mint). Between the edge and the center of the coin is a rim of closely spaced dots. Between the edge and this rim, a circular inscription runs around: CHISTAGO ZOLOTA 1 ZOLOTNIK 39 DOLY The edge of the coin is decorated with a toothed border of sharp serrations pointing inward.
  • Obverse
The central part features the State Emblem of the Russian Empire — a double-headed eagle, its heads crowned with two coronets, and a third, larger crown above them. On the eagle's breast is the Moscow coat of arms, a shield depicting St. George the Victorious slaying a dragon with a spear. Surrounding the shield is the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. On the wings are the titular coats of arms: on the right — Kazan, Astrakhan, and Siberian; on the left — Polish, Taurican, and Finnish. In its right talon the eagle holds a scepter, and in its left — an orb. Under the right talon is the letter "A", under the left — the letter "G". The initials of mintmaster Alexander Gertov. The border is decorated with denticles.
