Reverse In the central part, an inscription in four lines: ЧИСТАГО ЗОЛОТА 1 ЗОЛОТН=39 ДОЛЕЙ (Pure Gold 1 Zolotnik=39 Dolias). In the upper part of the coin (above the inscription) is the crown of the Russian Empire. Below the inscription runs a decorative line with a diamond in the middle and the abbreviation С.П.Б. (Saint Petersburg Mint). Along the left edge of the coin is a laurel branch, and along the right edge an oak branch. At the base, the branches are tied together with a ribbon forming a bow. The entire edge of the coin is stamped with raised denticles.
Obverse In the central part is the State Emblem of the Russian Empire — a double-headed eagle with wings spread and lowered. On the eagle's chest is the coat of arms of Moscow — a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a serpent with a long spear (the serpent's head is to the right). The heraldic shield, above the eagle's heads, is crowned with the imperial crown. The eagle holds thunderbolts and a torch in its right talon and a laurel wreath in its left, intertwined with the ribbon of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. Below the ribbon are the letters: 'M' on the left, 'F' on the right. The initials of Mintmaster Mikhail Fedorov. Above the eagle is the denomination designation — the circular inscription 'ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ.' (FIVE RUBLES). Below the eagle is the year of minting '1823 ГОДА.' (YEAR 1823). The rim is decorated with short denticles.
