    The central part features a cartouche with a two-line inscription: ГРИВЕННИКЪ (GRIVENNIK). Below the inscription is the year of minting — 1764. Above the cartouche is the crown of the Russian Empire. To the left and right, two laurel branches extend from the cartouche's vignettes.

    The center of the obverse is occupied by the right-facing profile of the Russian Empress Catherine II. Along the edge, in an arc from the lower left, runs the inscription: Б•М•ЕКАТЕРИНА•II•IМП•IСАМОД•ВСЕРОС (B•M•EKATERINA•II•IMP•ISAMOD•VSEROS). In the lower part, beneath the portrait, is the abbreviation 'С П Б' (Saint Petersburg Mint).
