Reverse
The denomination (with stars to the left and right) and monetary unit are indicated on two lines: ⋆ 3 ⋆ RUBLYA. Below is a dividing element consisting of two elongated, oppositely directed figures with a dot between them. Under the divider is the year of mintage '1884'. Below that is the mint mark 'S.P.B.'. The central part is separated from the rest of the design by a circle of dots. Outside this circle is the circular inscription: CHISTAGO ZOLOTA 81 DOLYA, divided at the top by a floral rosette. The rim is decorated with denticles pointing inward.
Obverse
The center of the obverse features the lesser coat of arms of the Russian Empire—a double-headed eagle. Both eagle heads bear crowns, and a larger third crown is positioned between them. All three crowns are connected by a ribbon. On the eagle's breast is the coat of arms of Moscow—a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a serpent with a long spear (the serpent's head is to the left). The shield is surrounded by the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called. The wings bear the coats of arms (four on each wing): Kazan, Polish, Taurida, Astrakhan, Siberian, Georgian, Kiev and Novgorod, Vladimir. In the right talon is a scepter, and below it the letter 'A'. In the left talon is an orb, and below it the letter 'G'. Together the letters form the initials of Mintmaster Apollon Grasgoff. The rim is decorated with denticles pointing inward.
