The center of the obverse is occupied by the right-facing profile of Russian Empress Catherine II. In the lower part, below the portrait, is the abbreviation "S P B" (Saint Petersburg Mint). Along the edge, an inscription runs in an arc from the lower left: B•M•EKATERINA•II•IMP•ISAMOD•VSEROS• (By the Grace of God, Catherine II, Empress and Autocrat of All Russia).
