The center of the obverse is occupied by a double-headed eagle — the coat of arms of the Russian Empire. Both eagle heads bear crowns, and a third, larger crown is between them. All three crowns are connected by a ribbon. On the eagle's chest is the coat of arms of Moscow — a shield depicting St. George the Victorious on horseback, slaying a serpent with a long spear (the serpent's head is to the right). Surrounding the shield is the chain of the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. Heraldic shields on the wings: Left wing: Polish, Taurian, Finnish. Right wing: Kazan, Astrakhan, Siberian. In its right talon is a scepter, below it the letter 'M'. In its left talon is an orb, below it the letter 'W'. Together the letters indicate the Warsaw Mint. The coin's rim consists of teeth.
